Inspiring Site Visits

Last May, we awarded $535,000 in grants to seven amazing nonprofit agencies–thanks to the generosity of our 2017 Women’s Fund members. This fall we learned how those agencies are using our donations to change lives in our community.

During October and November, more than 300 members were welcomed by grantees in two dozen small-group site visits to see our grants in action (see story below to learn how we have impacted our community). Reaction from members was enthusiastic:

  • “Women’s Fund Site Visits are so unique. What a wonderful opportunity to really understand the difference our grants are making.”
  • “There’s no substitute for actually seeing the incredible work going on!”
  • “Site visits make our contributions real.”

Thanks to our Grantee Liaisons, Jayne Brechwald and Denise Hinkle, and our fabulous site visit coordinators, for making the 2018 Site Visits such a tremendous success!

Our Grantees are Changing Lives

This is the season of thanks and gift giving—and the close of our membership year when we total our 2018 donations into the pool of funds we will award to new grantees next spring. What better time to reflect on the gifts we have given this year to change the lives of women, children and families in our community:

  • 58 Teen Court youth and their families are receiving mental health support to help prevent possible reoffending and incarceration ($75,000 grant to CADA–Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse).

  • 297 children are being supported by a cohort of 33 family child care providers who received further training in business development ($65,000 to Children’s Resource & Referral).

  • 50 K-3 students in the Santa Barbara school district are enrolled in a program to remediate the effects of dyslexia so they can master reading and succeed academically ($50,000 grant to the Santa Barbara School District’s Dyslexia Intervention Program).

  • 145 preschool children and their families are learning to better understand their emotions and manage their behavior ($50,000 grant to the Goleta Union School District’s Early Childhood Classroom Behavior Intervention Program).

  • 600 people are receiving nourishment through the gift of a new diesel refrigerated truck used to pick-up, distribute and store temperature-sensitive food ($95,000 grant to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County).

  • 165 homeless women are being provided temporary emergency shelter and social services in a remodeled sleeping and restroom facility ($100,000 grant to the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission).

  • 550 low-income clubhouse youth learn, socialize and thrive in their safe, afterschool clubhouse under a newly renovated roof ($100,000 grant to the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County).

Grantee Corner: Children's Resource and Referral

Congratulations to Children’s Resource and Referral! This summer they received the “Accreditation Facilitation Project of the Year” award from the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC).

A $65,000 Women’s Fund grant in May 2018 supported this program by funding business development training for local Family Child Care providers. The comprehensive three-tier program provides progressive levels of coaching, extensive child care training and guidance in developing good business practices.
