Nancy Harter, Women's Fund 2015-16 Steering Chair

You can read Nancy Harter’s bio on our website, but to get to know her better, we asked her to answer some simple questions and to provide us with a candid photo. She is pictured above with her two-year old grandson Isaac.

When and why did you join the WF? I joined in 2009. I knew about the WF but had no idea that I didn’t need an invitation to join and that they offered group opportunities.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering for the WF? I spend as much time as possible with my grandsons; otherwise I garden and I read (a lot of fiction).

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement? In 2000, I co-chaired a successful grassroots, shoestring-budget campaign to pass a secondary school bond measure that required a 2/3 majority vote.

If you could pick three adjectives to describe yourself, what would they be? In no particular order—decisive, organized, self-deprecating.

Learn how the Women's Fund helped Isla Vista Youth Projects

Thanks in large part to a 2013 Women’s Fund grant, family- and children-focused Isla Vista Youth Projects (IVYP) was named 2014 Nonprofit of the Year by the Goleta Chamber of Commerce.

The Women’s Fund grant funded capital improvement that repaired walkways and the parking lot surface, added signage and lighting so parents and children could safely enter and exit the building and expanded the play yard to bring it in compliance with licensing regulations for the state preschool at IVYP.

With the physical boundaries of the playground expanded, IVYP added a climbing structure, sandbox, shade coverings and gardening boxes to enhance the outdoor classroom program. These improvements benefited all of IVYP’s family programs (preschool, ESL child development, child care, parent education) as well as many community organizations who use the facilities on nights and weekends: CALM, New Beginnings, Isla Vista Medical Clinic, and Community Action Commission Summer Food Distribution Program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Isla Vista Elementary School.

As a result of the Women’s Fund grant, IVYP was able to expand from 22 half-day spaces to 30 badly needed, full-day spaces in their preschool program, which is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
