Because of a decade-long decline in the number of child care spaces available, Santa Barbara now has two children for every one licensed child care space, according to recent estimates, and money for recruitment and retention of new licensed child care businesses has virtually disappeared. Children’s Resource and Referral helps low-income families obtain child care and start Family Child Care businesses. This grant provides funding for two part-time staff for one year. These staff will recruit, train and coach 20 new Family Child Care business owners, helping them become licensed. The goal is to create 200 additional age-appropriate, safe child care spaces—a significant increase. Creating these additional child care spaces will make it possible for more parents to go to work or finish school. This grant enables the agency to reestablish its Family Child Care licensing program using a model developed in collaboration with First Five.
