Dental Access for Special-Needs Patients

Wheelchair users and other special-needs individuals often lack access to dental care because they are unable to transfer into conventional dental chairs. Treatment options are limited when a patient’s fragility, pain, size or body weight make it impossible for her/him to use a standard chair. Lack of timely treatment can lead to tooth decay and gum infections which can result in costly emergency room visits. Ergonomically designed platforms will allow wheelchairs to be locked in place so patients can receive treatment while seated in their chairs. This grant will pay for two Compact Wheelchair Platforms for use in SBNC Dental clinics in Santa Barbara and Goleta. Primary beneficiaries will be low-income patients, mostly women and handicapped children.  Having these platforms will allow SBNC to make comprehensive dental care available to patients whose special needs might otherwise prevent effective treatment.
