Preschool Scholarships for Dual Language Immersion Program

This grant will provide scholarships to partially subsidize enrollment costs of children from low-income families in the Carpinteria Children’s Project’s (CCP) dual language immersion preschool program.

Only about 30% of local children entering kindergarten are academically prepared, and more than 40% of kindergarteners speak a language other than English at home. Non-English-speaking Latino kindergarteners rarely catch up in school with their English-speaking peers.

Carpinteria Children’s Project provides much needed, quality child care in combination with a unique dual language immersion program that instructs preschoolers in Spanish and English. The goal is to close the kindergarten-readiness gap between English-only speakers and English learners.

With this funding, CCP will be able to provide scholarships that partially cover enrollment costs for 20-40 new students from low-income families. CCP anticipates that at least 70% of limited-English-proficient children will be rated “Ready to Go” or “Almost Ready” as determined by the Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile when they enter kindergarten.
