Mentoring for Low-Income, First-Generation College Students

Partially fund a staff position for one-on-one mentorship, career coaching, and leadership workshops to help low-income, first-generation students apply for and graduate from college, and Fragisecure employment.

High-achieving, low-income students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District may possess fortitude, motivation, and inner strength. But even those qualities, along with their academic achievements, may not be enough to weather the complex and competitive college admissions process, including applications, scholarships, financial aid, and decision-making. Once admitted, they may not have the financial resources, networks, and time management skills to thrive in a college environment.

Since 2019, the Mission Scholars program has helped promising 10th graders, guiding them toward college success and professional employment, eventually positioning them to become future leaders of the Santa Barbara community that is their home.

Support from the Women’s Fund will provide 2500 hours of one-on-one mentorship, targeted internship placements, and high-impact professional development

workshops for 130 college students, 95% of whom are the first in their family to graduate from college.
