The Accelerated Reader program increases reading proficiency for elementary students in the Santa Barbara Unified School District by giving students in-classroom access to an extensive library of books. Each book is assigned a point value depending upon difficulty, so teachers can guide students to books that are rewarding because they match the student’s skill level. After completing a book, students take a multiple choice test that provides teachers and parents with instant feedback on comprehension. This grant pays for 6,250 books to be distributed among 140 classroom libraries for K-3 students. Having access to a wide variety of quality books matched to skill level makes it more likely children will enjoy reading and develop the proficiency needed to succeed in school and adulthood. Santa Barbara Education Foundation is the fiscal agent.
